Is CleanChoice Energy Legitimate?
Dec 23, 2025
Yes, CleanChoice Energy is legitimate. We’re a licensed/certified U.S. renewable energy supplier serving more than 200,000 customers across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Midwest. Since 2012, we’ve supplied only 100% clean electricity from U.S. solar and wind farms in the regions we serve.
Our mission has always been to make clean energy easy, transparent, and accessible.
But we know that when you start researching energy suppliers, it can get confusing fast. You’ll find plenty of opinions—and not all of them tell the full story. To better understand what truly sets CleanChoice Energy apart, we cover how we got started, how our pricing works, and the real environmental impact our customers make every day. Because at the end of the day, our goal remains the same: to make clean energy easy and accessible for everyone.

How Did CleanChoice Energy Get Started?
CleanChoice Energy was originally founded as Ethical Electric by CEO Tom Matzzie, a Pennsylvania native who grew up near coal-burning power plants. After witnessing first hand the health and environmental tolls of air pollution caused by burning coal, he was inspired to support clean energy in his own life. But when he installed solar panels on his home, he found the process to be unnecessarily difficult.
So he set out to create a simpler alternative—one that would make clean energy easier for everyone to access, regardless of if you rent your home, if your roof is shaded or faces the wrong direction, or if you simply don’t have the time and energy to go through the process of installing solar panels.
Tom’s vision was to create a company where homeowners and renters alike could easily sign up for clean energy in just minutes—with no installations, no equipment, no change in utility service or reliability, and no hidden fees. What began as that simple idea in 2012 has grown into a mission-driven clean energy supplier serving more than 200,000 customers across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Midwest.
Today, under the leadership of Tom and President Zoe Gamble, who has been featured in Newsweek, Bankrate, The Business Journals, PV Magazine, and SolarQuarter for her clean energy leadership, CleanChoice Energy continues to expand its solar generation projects, uphold transparent pricing, and make it easier than ever for people to create real environmental impact through their everyday electricity use.

How Does CleanChoice Energy Differ from Other Renewable Energy Suppliers?
CleanChoice Energy stands apart from other clean energy suppliers because we don’t just supply clean energy—we generate it.
In addition to supplying 100% renewable electricity backed by Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), we also develop, own, and operate our own solar farms. In fact, CleanChoice Energy is the first company in the U.S. that both generates and supplies only 100% clean energy. Each CleanChoice customer contributes to the addition of new clean energy onto the electric grid.
Since we’ve started building solar farms and generating solar energy, CleanChoice customers now play an even greater role in the clean energy transition.
How We Compare | CleanChoice Energy | Other Clean Energy Suppliers |
Business Model | Build, own, and operate new solar farms and supply 100% clean energy to customers | Only supply clean energy to customers—do not typically build, own, or operate solar farms |
Effect on the Grid | Expand renewable energy infrastructure and add new clean energy onto the grid | Add new clean energy onto the grid |
Your Impact | Support the construction of new solar farms and the addition of new clean energy onto the grid | Support the addition of new clean energy onto the grid |
Where Does CleanChoice Energy’s Electricity Come From?
American homes get their power from a mix of energy sources. Electricity generated from coal, nuclear, oil, natural gas, wind, and solar all goes to the same grid. To keep track of the electricity generated by “green power” sources like solar and wind, the EPA created Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). For power to be officially considered “clean,” it must be matched with RECs. All of the electricity that CleanChoice Energy customers use is replenished with 100% renewable energy.
In addition, we currently generate energy at our Blairs Valley Solar Farm in Franklin County, PA—our first fully owned solar farm, which came online in 2024 and is adding new renewable energy capacity to the PJM grid (which serves customers in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Midwest).
We’re also hard at work developing other new solar farms in New York and Pennsylvania, with even more to come in future years. When you choose CleanChoice as your electricity supplier, your support will help CleanChoice continue to develop solar projects and grow real renewable energy capacity.
Here are some of the solar farms that we have completed or are in our pipeline:
Solar Farm Name | County | State | Capacity |
Blairs Valley | Franklin County | Pennsylvania | 26.15 MW |
Kylertown | Clearfield County | Pennsylvania | 29.42 MW |
Hawthorn | Rensselaer County | New York | 27.1 MW |
Dolan | Washington County | New York | 27.1 MW |

Additionally, we don’t just aim to simply generate electricity at our solar farms. We strive to be good stewards of the land, and we’re proud to take good care of our solar projects and the communities where they're located. In addition to generating clean energy, we:
Place bird, bat, and bee houses on our land to support local species
Use local garden nurseries to plant landscaping around solar projects to reduce sight-line visibility
Protect natural wetland habitats with fencing setbacks and protections in our plannings
Use agricultural fencing or wildlife-friendly fencing whenever possible
Use seed mixes to support native pollinators
By enriching the soil, protecting wildlife and pollinators, and supporting local communities, we’re exemplifying how renewable energy can do good on multiple levels.
How Does Choosing CleanChoice Energy Make a Positive Impact?
Powering your home with 100% renewable energy from CleanChoice Energy, instead of fossil fuels like coal and gas, is one of the most impactful steps you can take to help the environment.
More than 200,000 CleanChoice Energy customers contribute to a staggering collective impact. Since our founding in 2012, CleanChoice customers have used more than 11 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of 100% clean, pollution-free energy. This has the same environmental impact* as:
More than 131 million trees planted; or
More than 8.8 billion pounds of coal not burned; or
More than 1.8 million gas-powered cars taken off the road for one year!
*Per the EPA Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator
Switching to CleanChoice Energy supports new solar development in the U.S. CleanChoice customers contribute to the construction and operation of new renewable energy projects that expand clean energy access and clean the electric grid.
By building our own solar farms, we’re growing America’s renewable energy infrastructure, creating jobs, adding more clean energy to the electric grid, and benefiting local communities. Together with our customers, we are building a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
