Maryland Bans Fracking Statewide

In a historic moment last Friday, the Maryland General Assembly voted to ban hydraulic fracturing statewide. The bill passed in the Maryland House with a 97-40 vote and in the Senate with a 35-10 vote. Citing environmental concerns, Governor Hogan stated, “Protecting our clean water supply and our natural resources is critically important to Marylanders, and we simply cannot allow the door to be opened for fracking in our state.”

The practice of hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” for natural gas has severe environmental consequences. Fracking is a technique in which highly toxic chemicals are mixed with water and blasted at high pressures into geologic fissures to release natural gas. During this process, local water sources can be polluted and methane, a greenhouse gas, is released.

In 2011, former governor, Martin O’Malley, put a two year hold on fracking until more studies could be done. After the hold ended, the 2015 state legislature passed another two year moratorium on the practice. The legislature’s vote last week came as the moratorium was set to end this upcoming October.

Combined with other sustainable commitments, Maryland continues its environmental leadership. With its dedication to reducing emissions and supporting renewable energy, Maryland is an exemplary state when it comes to clean energy. Not only will this decision help prevent water and air pollution, it will also help create thousands of jobs and grow the Maryland economy. CleanChoice Energy applauds this forward-thinking decision.

By supporting 100% wind and solar energy, you send an important message to our leaders and policy makers that clean energy is the way of the future. Thank you for being part of the clean energy revolution. Using clean energy with CleanChoice Energy supports the development of regional wind and solar farms, reducing the need for fracking and making our planet healthier and more sustainable for years to come.
